Our Story

In the early beginning, the group was known as the 7th St Louis Scout Group. In 1956, with the merger of the Catholic Scout groups under the Roman Catholic Association. The group had to change its identity to 10th Roman Catholic.

Thereafter, with the introduction of the “Mauritius Scout Association (MSA)” . The group name finally changed to 6th Scout Group of Port-Louis Immaculee Conception.

Scouting in Mauritius

Scouting was introduced in Mauritius in 1912.

Samuel Blunt de Burgh Edwards, at 17 at years old, started scouting with three of his friends in his hometown Curepipe.

Mauritius Scout Association

The Mauritius Scout Association was adopted in 1971 under the World Scout Association entity.

The Story of Scouting

Scouting started in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell, a lieutenant-general in the British Army who served from 1876 until 1902 in India and Africa.
In 1899, during the Second Boer War in South Africa, Baden-Powell troops successfully secured the town of Mafeking in a siege which lasted seven months. Baden-Powell’s troops were vastly outnumbered, so he used local boys to administer first aid, carry messages and run other chores.
On returning to the UK, Baden-Powell realized that boys at home could benefit from similar sorts of activities to the boys at Mafeking. These activities went on to form the basis of the Scouting Movement.
So he took 20 boys and an experimental camp in 1907. It was held during the first nine days of August in 1907 at Brownsea Island, England. The camp was a great success and proved to its organizer, Robert Baden-Powell, that his training and methods appealed to young people and really worked. In January 1908, Baden-Powell published the first edition of “Scouting for Boys”. It was an immediate success and has since sold over 100 million copies, making it one of the best selling books of all time.
